What is Urban Art?

As defined by Wikipedia Urban art is a style of art that relates to cities and city life often done by artists who live in or have a passion for city life. In that way urban art combines street art and graffiti and is often used to summarize all visual art forms arising in urban areas, being inspired by urban architecture or urban life style.

Essentially urban art is the visual image created by artists expressing and or relating to urban lifestyle and culture. Much similar to its brother urban music, urban art is constantly changing and evolving. Growing from what was once considered vandalism Graffiti, one of the most popular forms of urban art, is now used to rehabilitate areas with intricately crafted mural pieces.

Urban Art has grown far from its humble beginnings condemned and confined in urban settings, urban art has experienced much commercial success as large corporations have taken notice to the appeal and marketing potential urban art provides. You can now find ads for fortune 500 companies displayed as murals or art pieces in urban areas commissioning the same artist whose actions where once deemed criminal.

Along with pushing the boundaries of acceptance with its commercial success urban art also has a celebrated history of its migration and acceptance into the mainstream art world. Often referred to as Pop Art sighting the popularity that has grown with the style. Urban art celebrates great forefathers such as Keith Haring, Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat and others.
